Supporting Recovery, Managing Swelling & Improving Comfort

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised, gentle treatment designed to support the movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. It may be recommended for people experiencing lymphoedema, persistent swelling following surgery or injury, or swelling related to cancer treatment.

At Dardanup Health & Wellness Centre, our experienced therapists provide personalised, evidence-informed care focused on improving comfort, supporting movement and helping you return to everyday life with greater confidence.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Many people are surprised to learn that the lymphatic system plays an important role in maintaining healthy fluid balance, supporting immune function and removing waste products from tissues.

When this system becomes overwhelmed or damaged, fluid can build up, causing swelling, discomfort and a feeling of heaviness.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised hands-on technique using slow, gentle movements designed to encourage lymphatic fluid to move through functioning lymphatic pathways.

Unlike a traditional massage, MLD uses very light pressure and follows the natural anatomy of the lymphatic system.

Conditions we commonly see:

Lymphoedema

Whether primary or secondary lymphoedema, swelling can affect comfort, movement and confidence. Manual Lymphatic Drainage may form part of a broader management plan designed to help control swelling and improve quality of life.

Swelling After Surgery

It is normal to experience swelling after surgery, but sometimes swelling persists longer than expected.

MLD may assist recovery following procedures such as:

  • Knee replacement

  • Hip replacement

  • Shoulder surgery

  • Plastic surgery

  • General surgery

Cancer-Related Swelling

Some cancer treatments can affect lymphatic drainage and increase the risk of lymphoedema.

Our therapists provide compassionate care while working alongside your GP, surgeon or specialist where appropriate.

Chronic Oedema

Persistent swelling may have many contributing factors.

Following assessment, Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be incorporated into your management plan alongside movement, compression therapy (where indicated) and education.
